Penrith Youth Orchestra
In February 2018, history was made for young musicians in Western Sydney when 44 students came together in the inaugural workshops of Penrith Youth Orchestra (PYO). The youth orchestra builds on the highly successful Penrith Strings program which ran from 2015 to 2017 through a partnership between Penrith Symphony Orchestra (PSO), The Joan, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO). For 2018, we have enrolled students in all sections of the orchestra.
PYO rehearsals, workshops and performances run on a project basis and fit into three Sunday afternoons each term. PYO is complementary to other orchestral and band programs. One of its special features is that students receive expert tutoring and mentoring from PSO and ACO musicians for each section of the orchestra, for each rehearsal and performance.
The first public concert to feature PYO will be held at 3.00pm on Sunday 20 May at the Joan. The ACO Ensemble will perform a few works for string quartet followed by performances by PYO.
We still have a few vacancies in lower wind, lower brass and percussion.
