Penrith Youth Orchestra

The ACO (Australian Chamber Orchestra), Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre (The Joan) and the Penrith Symphony Orchestra (PSO) partner to deliver the Penrith Youth Orchestra Program to increase musical activity and engagement in the Penrith catchment.

Penrith Youth Orchestra (PYO) was established in 2018, building on the success of the Penrith Strings Program, which the partner organisations established in 2015.

The youth orchestra brings together school-aged musicians from the Penrith region to participate in regular rehearsals, workshops and performances. The feedback from both programs has been overwhelmingly positive.

Penrith Youth Orchestra offers young musicians:

  • Access to expert mentoring:¬†leading performers and musicians from the prestigious Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Penrith Symphony Orchestra tutor and mentor our young students.
  • A family-friendly schedule: we do not demand weekly rehearsals. Workshops are held on three Sunday afternoons each term.
  • A warm, caring and supportive environment: truly a collaborative and community feel, akin to Penrith. Music-making in PYO is about learning and collaboration, not about competition.
  • Proximity: a locally based youth orchestra dedicated to students in Western Sydney and its surrounds.
  • External support: a strong partnership of three key organisations ensures a solid educational, musical and administrative foundation.
